How High Should You Hang Your LED Grow Lights? A Stage-by-Stage Guide
One of the most critical aspects of indoor growing is dialing in the exact distance between your LED grow lights and your plant canopy. Hang them too high, and your plants will stretch and produce airy, weak growth. Hang them too low, and you risk bleaching the leaves or causing light burn. Here is a stage-by-stage guide to finding the "sweet spot" for your LED grow lights.
1. Seedling and Clone Stage
Seedlings and clones are incredibly fragile and require only a fraction of the light that mature plants do. Overwhelming them with high-intensity light will stunt their growth or even kill them.
- Recommended Height: 24 to 36 inches above the canopy.
- Pro Tip: If your LED fixture has a dimmer switch, turn it down to about 25-30% intensity. This allows you to save energy while keeping the lights at a manageable height.
2. Vegetative Stage
As your plants develop a robust root system and multiple sets of true leaves, they enter the vegetative stage. During this phase, they need more intense light to fuel rapid foliage growth and build strong, thick stems capable of supporting heavy yields later on.
- Recommended Height: 18 to 24 inches above the canopy.
- Pro Tip: Watch your plants closely. If the internodes (the space between branches) are too far apart, the plant is stretching for light, and you should lower the fixture slightly. If the leaves start curling upward at the edges (often called "taco-ing"), the light is too intense, and you should raise it.
3. Flowering Stage
The flowering stage is when your plants are the most light-hungry. To produce dense, resinous flowers or heavy fruits, you need to maximize the amount of photons hitting the canopy without crossing the threshold into light burn.
- Recommended Height: 12 to 18 inches above the canopy.
- Pro Tip: This is the time to turn your dimmers up to 100%. However, because the lights are closer and running at full power, continue to monitor for signs of light bleaching—where the tops of the buds or leaves turn a stark, unnatural white.
Always Consult the Manufacturer
While these measurements are a fantastic baseline, not all LED grow lights are created equal. A massive 1000W commercial LED bar fixture will need to be hung much higher than a compact 100W quantum board. Always check the PAR/PPFD maps and hanging recommendations provided by the manufacturer for your specific light.
By adjusting your light height as your plants transition through their life cycles, you'll ensure they get the perfect amount of energy exactly when they need it!
